You might want to check out the following on the NEWS/400 site.  I've
never tried it myself but Dave McKenzie is highly reliable.

Description - This utility changes the storage type of variables in an
AS/400 program object to automatic or static. Its most
     common use is to change an RPG program to automatic storage so that
it can be called recursively. Source and objects are
