News/400 published a routine that I wrote in either the December 1996 or 1997 
tips and
tools issue that does what I think you want.   It's a series of /COPY members 
that
checks for errors on API's and returns the result as a formatted CPF message.

Check the News/400 site for the code.  If it's not out there give me a shout 
and I'll
dig up a version for you.
