  • Subject: Converting RAID Striping from 4Disks to 8Disks

All,

As most of you familiar with the RAID-5 implementation on the AS/400
are aware, the RAID striping can be across 4 disks or 8 disks. Use of 8
disk striping can improve performance especially when one unit has
failed. Of course it is not always possible to have sets of 8
especially when less than 8 drives were initially available.

In the AS/400 Advanced Series handbook (GA19-5486-13) on page 63 the
third paragraph begins: "To convert the parity striping from four disk
units to eight, it is a simple command in OS/400." On page 114 it
states it just slightly differently: "...it is a simple software switch
command..."

The 64bit question is: What is that Command?????

As far as I know the entire raid set must be removed from the
configuration and re-added in order to accomplish this. PLEASE prove me
wrong!
