They automatically assume the job switch settings during program initialization, and are returned to the job when the RPG program terminates. IOW, setting U1 will not automatically set switch 1 until the program terminates. You can however, call a CL program, pass the switch setting, and have it update the job's switches without terminating the RPG program.
