  • Subject: New idea for outsourcing programming
  • From: "Leland, David" <dleland@xxxxxxxxxx>

I recently posted a note on this list, Newslink/400 and
comp.sys.ibm.misc.as400, requesting assistance for a program I wanted to
write (I posted it as "IFS Cleanup"). I did not get much of any helpful
feedback, but I'm certain that someone out there has done what I'd like
to do. So why aren't they responding? I'm sure there are a number of
reasons: time, hesitancy to share code which has the potential to make
money, etc.

I respect these reasons, being a programmer myself, but, it still
doesn't solve my immediate problem. So, I've hit upon an idea that,
while not necessarily revolutionary, may be something that has the
potential to "kill two birds with one stone". I haven't worked the
details out but my plan is as follows:

I'd like to be able to post either on our company web site, or
an internet newsgroup, or somewhere, a list of discrete programs which
we are entertaining bids on. My thinking is that these would have to be
very distinct, non-integrated programs, and would have to be very
well-defined - not projects, just simple stand-alone programs. I
currently have 2 programs like this that are simply things on my to-do
list that I never seem to get to.

Other details about payment, receipt of code, etc. would need to be
worked out, but don't seem insurmountable. As a programmer, I know that
I would be willing to bid on programs that were similar to ones I'd
already done - allowing me to make a little extra money without spending
a lot of time doing it.
