If I remember correctly I even tried this with our AS/400's 
years ago.   I believe the answer is no - you cannot 
directly connect them directly - you must go through a 
MAU (media access unit) - in ethernet terminalogy it is 
called a HUB (I believe).    It is an electrical problem.
You need a MAU.

I believe they have dumb or intelligent MAUs - ours 
are the dumb type purchased in 1986? when we first 
installed our Token Ring network from IBM and never 
has given us any problems (even moved physical 
locations once).

All MAUs out there ought to handle both 4 and 16Mbs 
so I don't see any reason to spend more than the 
low end -- vendors -- tell me why I am wrong here.
It won't make any difference in performance, just 
in error detection if one station is beaconing (just 
continiously transmitting) and can shut down the 
errant stations -- but if you only have 2 devices on 
your LAN ..................................... why bother.
