We had a similar problem a few months ago. - The cause of the problem was a forgotten function prototype for a called function (Pgmr forgot to #include the appropriate .H). - The type for the function result was assumed int by the compiler. - The called function delivered its type (a rather short enum) as specified in its prototype and implementation. - On the dev machine there were no errors at all. - On the prod machine it crashed. This problem has nothing to do with pointers. But it shows that there is no safety net when one ignores warnings (like func called with no prototype) or information messages (like variable not initialized...)
