in addition to the obvious software problems, many chip manufacturers
had hard wired dates into their computer chips and ICs, that run many
things.  such as airliners, air traffic control, cars, train scheduling
etc.

remember, these chips were designed and mfr'd as long as 20 years ago. 
No one really knows how they'll behave at the turn of the millenia

Insurance companys are already making plans on how and IF they will
insure airlines, rail roads, etc for the last month or two of 1999 and
the first couple of 2000. 

I'm staying home those months  ;)
