I've seen this happen when there are unprintable characters.  If the spool file
was created with RPLUNPRT(*YES), it would just ignore the bad characters.

Because your file "disappears", is it possible that it is supposed to be going 
to
a remote system (perhaps at Sly Stallone's house?) and is being bounced back?

By remote I mean and outqueue created with CRTOUTQ RMTSYS(xxxx)
