That's exactly what we have been doing ever since Zip + 4 came out, and
it has been working fine. Our field is a 10-byte alphanumeric field forced
to upper case, and so far it has handled all Canadian, UK, European, and
Asian Postal Codes we have encountered without any problems. We do make
our users (includes me!) enter the dash for 9-digit zip codes, but no one
is complaining.
