I've found that if I assign a default user to the connection, it signs the connection back on automatically. If not, I get the Windows prompt to reestablish the connection.

As you may know, we need to be careful about security here. The connection has all the authority of the user that established it. There is exposure, based on the level of access that user has. This authority is not the same as that in any interactive session established over the connection. Can be messy!
