user resistance I can deal with.  It's users' bosses that make me go drink
from the toilet bowl.  These people always have the power, and they use
it.  So they'll see dates how ever they ask. 

But I do like that idea of the three letter abbreviation though.  I
wonder...  would it be hard to turn that into a custom "user edit code"? 
Wouldn't it be great if we could have edit code 5 be   "dd Jul yyyy"  and 
edit code 6 be  "Jul dd yyyy"?
