The AS/400 is (virutally) 100% compatible with the System/38, which is part
of the AS/400 value proposition.  The AS/400 problem is that they never
break (from a software perspective), so many users are lulled into a false
sense of security that they never have to be upgraded!

The legacy of RPG tells me that there is a NOMINAL performance in using the
cycle.  The cycle was developed for small systems in the days of the
System/3.  On a System/3 Model 6, the difference in using the cycle, or not
was the difference in getting the program to fit into 5K or not!!!!!
Today, with systems up to 20 GB of memory, this is a nit.
