  • Subject: V3R1 to V3R2 Upgrade

I did a V3R1 to V3R2 upgrade over the Labor Day weekend and decided to
warn you of a potential problem. Throughout the literature you are
warned of potential problems with OEM tape drives failing bacause they
may not be compatible with the V3R2 install.

I was going to do this upgrade over Memorial Day weekend but found out
the prior week from American International that my AI 911-OCS tape drive
(8mm, dual drive) was not compatible with the upgrade to V3R2. I
ordered the firmware upgrade ($1000) and AI had IBM install it. The
tape drive has worked OK on V3R1 since.

The automatic install failed with SRC code B600-0401 trying to install
OS/400 (the LIC got installed). I had to place an IBM service call.
Rochester said this meant the tape drive was not compatible with the
V3R2 install. They suggested I try the manual install. The manual
install failed with the same error. The worst part was that the LIC
installed, but not the operating system, so I could not go back to
V3R1. I ended up paying to use the local IBM office tape drive (@$500)
so we could be in business come Tuesday morning.

Beware of OEM tape drive maufacturer's claiming they support the V3R2
install - that may not be correct. The only good part of this is due to
a mailing address mixup at their end, we have not paid for that tape
drive upgrade yet. <G>

BTW, now that V3R2 is installed, the AI tape drive works just fine. The
IBM CE thinks (but doesn't know) it would have worked OK _after_ V3R2
was up and running even without this formware upgrade.
