I know of at least one solution. It requires a dedicated PC, software from
Farabi, and a connection to the Internet. The "Gateway" PC is connected
directly to your AS/400 and functions as a server (by using Farabi's software)
for anyone accessing it over the Internet. You can have up to 30 people
accessing the gateway. You can use any ISP as your method for connecting the
Gateway to the Internet; however, I would suggest shelling out the additional
dollars for a dedicated 56KB line. Standard telephone line connection provided
by ISPs will drop frequently.

We have tested it, and it works quite well.

Your costs:
PC: $2-3K
Gateway and Client Software: $1-1.5 K
Dedicated 56KB Line for Gateway: $250/month; $200 setup (you'll have to shop
around for this..this is close to our price)
Internet Connection for Clients: $20/month/client

Total Approx.: $3.5K setup; $300/month

Farabi will help you with installation. Their web address is:
http://www.farabi.com

Perhaps someone in this group knows of other providers.

: Hi,
: I am investigating connecting our E10 to the internet and would appreciate
: any help with the following questions. The system is an 9404 E10 with a
: twinax controller and a basic communications controller ( 6152 ). The main
: goals are to provide reliable remote access (low transactions) for 12 hours
: per day and occasional (weekly) large file transfers.
:
: Question 1. What is the best (best=fastest and safest access for least $)
: approach to take? What are the +'s and -'s of each approach.
: 1.A. Use a PC connected via twinax and CA/400 to the AS/400 for connecting
: to the ISP? ( +'s= lots of firewall options, cheap fast modems, ...?, -'s= ?)
: 1.B. Use the 6152 comm. controller
: 1.C. Use the upcoming firewall card? (will it work on CISC box?)
: 1.D. Use ???
:
: Thank you,
