I have to slightly disagree with John Carr about the importance of
implementing certain data type right now or be damned. Having played around
with concepts like the Theory of Constraints, I am looking at the entire Y2K
muddle as an example of local optimization. That is, one person (or group)
does something to make their own situation work, and it comes to haunt the
entire organization.

Rushing to implement a specific data implementation or silver bullet solution
without considering the impact on the functions downline is IMHO disasterous.
Of course, that has been our blighted history as data processors, er..., MIS
professionals, um...., IT gurus, uh.... whatever we are referring to
ourselves this month.
