Sort of like client/server or CASE, isn't it?  Personally, I consider
middleware to be anything that bridges the operating system and application
software.  This can be anything from Help Systems' Robot to the ESS file
access tool to Showcase to Client Access.  Something that you don't NEED to
run your applications OR your system, but makes doing so easier.
