I have successfully integrated a similar parcel shipment package (Ascent
System from Pitney Bowes that handles UPS and RPS/FedEx Ground).

A brief checklist of items:
1) Picklist user-exit extracts required info to send ship-to address to an
AS/400 physical file,
2) Ascent System accesses the AS/400 physical file via ODBC,
3) Ascent System performs all required rate calculations for
carrier/weight/destination and produces bar-coded parcel label,
4) Shipment Manifest information from Ascent is returned via ODBC to AS/400
physical file,
5) Add-on module to MAPICS COM (unpaid/unsolicited plug for COM Offline
Shipment Interface from Custom Systems Corp. According to current newsgroup
threads, similar features are to be added to XA6 soon) is used to complete
the Shipping cycle.

It took awhile to get everything to come together, but it has been a pretty
stable operation for over a year and has saved CONSIDERABLE time in
transaction processing.
