How does one set up a host-based AS/400 printer in Linux? We have several

I know I need to get the printer set up in Linux first, but then what? How
does one set up an AS/400 "Printer" on the local machine?

The short answer is to create a printer session definition in your tn5250rc file and then start lp5250d passing that session name as an argument. The long answer is to read the HOWTO:

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
