I don't if it is exactly what you are looking for, but there is also a
technic
called "Servlet channeling", where an applet talks to a servlet.

We do that for example when we want to display graphs related to a
portfolio.
An applet is used to display the graph. This applets calls a servlet to get
portfolio data.

 If you want invoke a java application over internet you need to look into
JNLP (an implementation is Sun's WebStart:
http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/  ). It is very easy to use.
