I am pretty sure it was the book "Java RMI: Remote Method Invocation" that
had an implementation of a chat server in it (there are others around too).
The one in the Java RMI book looked interesting because it was pure Java
using RMI to communicate and it has support for a 'white board' as well.
That is, you could talk to each other by typing and draw on a shared
screen.  Good luck.
