Don't see why it wouldn't work as just an NFS share.

We thought at one time of using a NetApp Network Attached Storage device 
to store data from Domino. NetApp and IBM had whitepapers at NetApp's 
website for running this with Domino. NetApp said that this is awesome for 
Wintel, but for iSeries it's not performance friendly because the data had 
to be converted from 64-bit iSeries data to 32-bit NAS data.

Then just exclude that NFS share from your backup.
