I have the same problems. It is all to do with weaknesses in the SQL
precompiler and IBM's failure to improve it over several releases, despite
   pushing SQL.

The precompiler puts the converted code in QTEMP and compiles from there.
There is also a conflict with asking for debug and an event file, so the
   program is often compiled twice.

Anyway, the net result for me is that I have to run STRCODE as a batch job
and I have to specify in CODE that I want interactive compiles. This gets
me the errors in CODE, but I get them in a separate window, rather than
being embedded in my source. When fixing them all to often I fix the
wrong window... It is a pain, since I use a lot of embedded SQL.

It's not the fault of the CODE folks, its the fault of the SQL group
   dragging their heels.

I guess the long term solution is to stop making coding errors.
