Subject: RE: How to do RPG-type I/O in Cobol

Hi Richard,
 I noticed
the KEY IS phrase in the syntax diagram, but the example I provided
does not use it. Is KEY IS sort of an override to use a different key
than the one specified in the SELECT?

According to the manual:

   KEY IS
This phrase is syntax checked only.

So apparently it does nothing!!

Also, the READ filename without an error clause (such as INVALID KEY... or
AT END...) reads the next sequential record. But I think that format only
makes it thru the compiler when the ACCESS MODE is SEQUENTIAL.

If the ACCESS MODE IS DYNAMIC and you use the READ stmt without the error
clause, I dont think the compiler knows if you want a sequential or random
read.
