I can't recall where the setting is on Windows Word or what it is called Rob (as you know I use mac exclusively) but you can set a preference in Word to _not_ use so called "smart" quotes. I have that set in both Word and Pages because it drives me insane.

Well, that is your problem right there. Why, in heaven's name, do you
purposely introduce Word?

It's one thing to get a Word document from someone else. That's
outside your control. Maybe they don't know any better. But you are
doing this to yourself! I hope you're not doing this to other
people....
