Back to IBM for this one. After the first install of a package, npm creates /home/kturner/.npm but cannot access it afterwards when you try to install additional packages.
No clue why yet, as the authorities look OK.

So I simply deleted "/home/kturner/.npm" and it started working!

Something went a bit screwy with the previous PTFs that IBM have released to us I think.

Mmmmmm

uid: -196556
er: Error: ENOTDIR, scandir '/home/KTURNER/.npm/registry.npmjs.org/jsdoc/.cache.json'

Now if I drill down to '/home/kturner/.npm/registry.npmjs.org/jsdoc' using wrklnk the directory appears to be empty - but I know the file exists because if I put the full path in I can see the contents. Same applies to the .npm folder actually.

Some attribute of the directory is preventing me from seeing it unless I access it directly.....weird.

I think that is syntactically incorrect but I get the gist - I will add some code to debug it.

Strangely it seems to be trying to
"get saving sails to /home/KTURNER/.npm/registry.npmjs.org/sails/.cache.json"
And failing - but I wonder why "/home/kturner" when the install should be global??

Need to figure out which condition on line 12 is causing the error. Try changing the file to have a console.log as follows.

if (er && er.code !== "ENOTDIR") return cb(er) console.log("p:%s er:%s !children.length:%s", p, er, !children.length)
if (er || !children.length) return fs.chown(p, uid, gid, cb)

As a side note, I've run into issues where chown and chmod didn't resolve security as expected and had to *additionally* use CHGAUT.

It is there in the debug log - node@v0.12.7

In my case I have *SECOFR user class and a group profile of QPGMR on
each machine.

Here is the gist:

What version of Node.js are you running?

Can you create a gist of this file? /QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/Node/
lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/chownr/chownr.js

Guessing it has something to do with chown's** colon portion of the parm.

Look at your profile's on each machine and whether they have a group
profile specified.

Actually it is not just global installs that fail. Local installs
also fail with the same error.

We have a very frustrating, irritating and puzzling issue with node and
npm on some of our LPARS. On some, both node and npm work as expected.
On others it doesn't work at all. There does not seem to be any
difference between the LPARS that do and do not work, but clearly
there must be something amiss under the covers. We have reported it
to IBM, who have released further updates for us to try (SI58114 -
doesn't say what they are fixing or changing) but still no dice.

The problem is that we simply cannot install any packages globally. NPM
barfs for anything we try. For example:

npm install jsdoc -g

returns
1 verbose cli [ '/usr/bin/node', '/usr/bin/npm', 'install', 'jsdoc',
'-g' ]
2 info using npm@2.11.3
3 info using node@v0.12.7
27 verbose stack TypeError: uid must be an unsigned int
27 verbose stack at TypeError (native)
27 verbose stack at Object.fs.chown (fs.js:984:11)
27 verbose stack at

/QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/Node/lib/node_modules/npm/node_modules/chownr/
chownr.js:12:43
27 verbose stack at FSReqWrap.oncomplete (fs.js:95:15)

The ": uid must be an unsigned int " is persistent, regardless of
package :(

Anyone else have this type of issue? IBM are able to provide us with
anything useful to help.
