Hi Henrik,

I was referring to the technology preview regarding JSON:

https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/ibmi/library/i-json-store-technology/

I'm not sure if this is the same thing as storing JSON documents in BLOB\CLOB fields. I suspect it isn't the same.

Thanks,

Kelly

JSON as weel as XML can be stored in a BLOB/CLOB fields i DB2.

This is however not the problem, but COBOL/RPG are since they are SBCS languages and JSON is UTF-8 (Unicode) datastreams so any characters in the store JSON must be within the range of the SBCS EBCDIC codepage the program is running under.

My apologies for such an open-ended question.

We're a COBOL shop (split between ILE and OPM). From what I can tell,
our COBOL developers don't do much more with DB2 than create physical
files and logical files using DDS. We have several SQL queries. We
also have several stored procedures. But mostly our developers write
COBOL programs that use record level access.

I have the IBM Redbook on modernization, and I'm starting to read the
chapter on data-centric development.

I'd appreciate any thoughts or info on the following:

1. I know DB2 for i has some new capabilities around storing JSON. What
other capabilities does DB2 have that would be useful for web and
mobile development? What should we be taking advantage of in DB2 for
web and mobile enablement?

2. I have a very vague idea that moving business logic and development
from COBOL into DB2 as much as possible is a good thing. But I don't
really understand. I can't explain what this means, why we should do
it, or offer a few good examples. Would someone mind briefly sharing
some ideas or talking points for a good elevator speech?

Thanks in advance for any insights and info.
