I guess I need another cup of coffee but let me see if I have this correct:

1) Your IBM i generates a list of data (don't really care what the format is) but it is your IBM i that generates it, correct?

2) So next, your IBM i displays that same list of data that originated on the system in a web page generated by the system, correct?

3) That page, which was served by your IBM i and contains data from your IBM i is then displayed as a web page on an iPad (lets say). The manager goes through the list and checks off (approves) the items that are OK to promote and then submits that page for processing on your IBM i or does it submit the data for processing elsewhere? (this is the key part I am nit understanding)

I am trying to understand where you say the data is being either retrieved or submitted to some server/process other than your IBM i. I understand that the list is *presented* on an iPad somewhere on the planet, but the data (page) serving and processing appears to all be happening on your IBM i.

Or, did I miss something in the exchange here that indicates some processing/serving that doesn't happen on the i ?

Let me try and clarify this a little more.

Firstly thanks for the comments.

We use a reporting tool on the AS/400 that displays data only. In this
instance, there is a list of programs that need permission to be promoted
into production. The manager will display the list on her screen, iPad or
cell phone and if she approves it, she will select an approve button, which
should then call something like a web service to process the approval. The
button will do a "call" to a CGI program to update the new status. It would
at that point return a confirmation screen from CGIDEV.
