Wouldn't Soundex give you part of what you want Paul?

Admittedly that won't help much with some names such as "Edward" and "Ted" for example. My brother-in-law's name is Hugh - but everybody calls him Mikey - no way you ever catch that. But Soundex should help with some.

Only other thing I can think of would be to use tables of common spellings/abbreviations etc to derive equivalents. SOmeone must have already built those - Google maybe ?
