I have three developers who do both java and RPG. One started as 100% RPG and moved to about 80/20 java/RPG. One other started java/php on windows and learned java/RPG on i. The third was ASP and COBOL and has moved to Java and RPG. Two others are split between RPG and Websmart. Initial java development was a bit slow, a lot due to learning the GUI developer tool set for websphere and not having any code to reuse. Now a project for a new web app is about equal for java or websmart

creating complex business web app are very hard no matter the main language, developing the main server part in rpgfree and the client in html
+ css + JS(jquery or other frameworks) is NOT slow than with other
languages, specially Java, Java is the more wasted time (Eagles) and nerves, sure you can start the project using java, but please call me when you see it finished.

And be sure also that your RPG programmers will NOT develop in java, even php, for a RPG programmer is by far more easy using rpgfree and learn html or better creating a two peoples team: one RPG other html+js

I have done both and still do both and I think I would agree the web
app takes longer then a 5250 app IF you did not adopt a framework that
does the stuff 5250/DDS does for you what HTML does not. Like make
sure a number is a number and a 2 decimal number does not have 6
numbers after the decimal point. And it does take some extra time to
add the extra usability code in that HTML allows you to add. AJAX
calls for lookups, dynamic dropdown lists, built from the database.
And then later using some tool to find every "screen" that has the
word "Bingo" on it so you can change it to "Bongo" because someone in
marketing decided a new name was needed for something. And if you consider current staff moving from one to the other.
But bring a relatively new college grad into the mix or spend the
money for a good framework and staff retraining and the web is just as
fast and usually ends up with a happier user. Although to do think
there are some apps that still are more efficient and work better as
5250 and web actually slows things down

I have been watching the discussion - but I wouldn't agree with the
assertion that "We believe that Web development today is too slow
because of low productivity, and therefore expensive."

Some might think so, but I don't think everyone does. We have a
medium sized development team doing nothing but web development on the IBMi, and I
don't consider the team to be slow or to suffer
with low productivity. Maybe this is because we are using our own
Renaissance Framework that we are all familiar with.

Thorbjorn/Dave/Guillermo,

The discussion is scoped on the following:

What is the quickest way to create IBM i Web Applications?
This discussion is scoped to creating new web applications that
utilize the IBM i data and programs. It can include ISV tools, IBM
tools, and/or languages and frameworks. Focus should be on the
creation of typical IBM i business applications.

We believe that Web development today is too slow because of low
productivity, and therefore expensive.

Web development is too HARD for the typical RPG developer who has not
had a chance to learn JavaScript, AJAX, PHP/Java/.NET/CGI, HTML, CSS.
