 There is normally a limit on the number of concurrent XHR connections
the browser will allow. 

How about queuing XHR requests in a JavaScript array so that you might have as many concurrent requests as you want, but run them one at a time? Just send the next request when the prior one is answered? If you want to "send" multiple requests at the same time, how about doing it in separate inline frames?
