Can I "write" it to a character field in my program? Avoid IFS completely?
Seems dumb to write a file, read it and send it, delete it, create it, read
it, send it.... and so on.

As long as MAILTOOL allows you to pull your message content from a text
file on the IFS, you should be able to use CGIDEV2. You will use
UpdHtmlVar and WrtSection to write your template as normal, and then use
WrtHtmlToStmf to dump the output to the IFS. Don't let the "Html" fool
you. I have used CGIDEV2 to write RTF, XML, Ajax, CSS, Javascript, and
probably other stuff I am forgetting. It will write anything text related
or text based.

I still want it in plain text, but use a template-based system if

I am presuming that will be move flexible for me in the long run. The
emails have changed several times already since I wrote it and I want to
avoid having to rewrite the program AGAIN to add in the new wording for
and
updated disclaimer or something in the future. If I need to rewrite, do
it
right this time.

I currently use Brad's MAILTOOL to send the emails.

Maybe I'm slow, but what will CGIDEV2 give you? Do you still want the
final email to be plain text, or are you saying that you want to switch
to
HTML email, or something?

We send a lot of our utility bills via plain-text email. Previously, I
just
built a string with the text and sent it out. Things are changing and
I
think it might be time to look at CGIDEV2 or equivalent methods so I
can
have a text file with the core message in a template and just replace
the
few fields that I need to insert in the message. We have two different
messages one for those that are on auto-pay and on for those that are
not.

What is out there? What isn't too difficult to get going? I have
limited
time to work on this as it came in due to customer inquiry but should
be
done. What has low to no cost?
