Thanks all, I have a couple of weeks before I will need to decide
which way to go so I shall keep plodding away until then. If it looks
like the CMS will provide everything that's necessary, I'll use it.
But no one mentioned frameworks. Surely, a professional web developer
would not think of making a site from scratch without one? I haven't
yet looked at them as I had enough with trying to learn OOP, but now I
must and don't know which to choose.

Depending on the site you are making, WordPress would work just fine.
While some have built large sites on WordPress, I see WP as a good
small and simple site CMS. The framework is very flexible and can be
expanded easily via plugins (paid, free, and homemade). And has been
tested to be one of the most secure CMSes on the market (if you
install updates immediately). Sorry, I don't remember the reference I
had seen to make that statement.
