Well, the cost of IBM software licensing is a consideration, but when it's
amortized over the life of a server, it's probably not that much of a
consideration, especially when you compare it to the cost of a system
administrator's time. An IBM i license on a model 720 is $2,245 per core.
Dividing that between 30-40 partitions would make it pretty cheap per
partition. Amortizing that across 5 years seems pretty economical too. I
understand that a company like IBM can achieve greater economies of scale, but
it might work for a small shop to get into cloud services too.
