Scott, thanks for this post - I'd got myself bound up in IWS, too, and should've been looking at IAS. The overview on the site has this description -

The integrated Web application server for i is a lightweight Java application server integrated into the operating system. The integrated Web application server contains an Open Services Gateway initiative (OSGi)-based Web servlet container that is readily accessible and provides a flexible foundation for developing jsp and servlet-based Java applications. The integrated Web application server delivers a clear path to the advanced capabilities of the WebSphere middleware portfolio.

The info is at http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/software/ias

Hi Richard,

I don't do much Java -- and don't have a useful opinion for you. But, I
wanted to interject something: You may be using the wrong term.

IWS is the Integrated Web Services Server which is designed to make it
easy to write SOAP web services with ILE HLLs. It isn't a Java
application server, but it _does_ run on one. The one that it runs on
is called the "Integrated Application Server" (IAS) and is included with
the OS.

So although you asked about the IWS as an alternative to Tomcat, I think
you really meant the IAS.

And, again, I don't have an opinion, I just wanted to try to clarify the
point in hopes that with a clearer question, you'll get better answers.

Looking to see if this could be a valid alternative to using Tomcat.

Although Tomcat seems much easier to deploy and we've used it for
years, I wouldn't mind using the integrated server if it makes sense
to serve i-specific apps.

It even works fine on V7R1.

Any opinions out there ?
