Well that to a degree was what they were originally going to do with Open Access but (thankfully) were talked out of it because it simply added overhead with no benefits. Anyone can write an OA handler that "wraps" the OA delivered data in XML if they want/need it - but as Profound, Look and VAI have proved XML is not needed.

A 5250 stream delivered as XML is already available in Zend Bridge - that is how it works and I suspect the additional overhead of the XML is what slows it down some - although I confess I haven't given it a test drive on Zend Server.
