I was in the same boat. I couldn't understand it either, conceptually. But then our Business Development Director came up with the following static prototype:

You must try both vertical and horizontal scrolling to see the effect. Then it makes sense.

That is a quite interesting prototype, and I haven't seen that effect before. What is the trick?
