It has probably already occurred to you, but I might as well mention that there seems to be some overlap, and potential synergy, between your new CGI interface and the Virtual Terminal/Workstation Extender that Niels Liisberg is working on.
Under the Virtual Terminal approach, you'd just be using the default server sign-on, rather than having the HTTP server prompt for user-id and password.
