file with name-IP relation is not named host but hostS:
C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hostS

if you want to access an ifs file in your as400 from an win-vista-pc you
can:

1.- show files in IFS using as400
in as400 type WRKLNK '/tmp'
as400 shows a line with "tmp DIR"
-type 5 and enter in the line
you can see some files

2.- show IFS from PC
open windows explorer (windows key + E), or open start + execute
type //as400 name or ip/tmp

if you can't see tmp files from your pc
then you need to do a "share" to the /tmp folder in the as400 ops
navigator: root.

if you can't see then maybe you don't have NETSERVER running.
depending as400 version you can start netserver in several ways, as
STRTCPSVR SERVER(*NETSVR)

You will find it at this location:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

It will be a file with no file extension: HOST

Open it with Notepad and type in the IP and Name relation and off you
go...make sure you save before closing the notepad
