Zend Core runs as an Apache module on an instance of Apache in PASE. You're

Has anyone looked into the benefits of this configuration vs. directing

As far as I know Scott has it right in terms of the benefits. Zend wanted to automate the set up (hence the use of port 89 as the default) but also to permit co-existence with existing web apps.

While at ZendCon we met a number of i users who were directing most of their PHP traffic directly to the PASE instance. I assume one just adds the additional port and IP related directives but Apache remains a mystery to me so I haven't explored the idea. They did say that it significantly improved their response time.

Have you checked the Zend forum? - that would be the best spot to look for details of how to do this.
