Hi Nathan,

IceBreak does not use CGI, it provides its own web server/service. All the
plumbing is already installed. All I required were a few small service
programs to construct my custom XML/JSON

The web service(s) I have created in IceBreak work very well and very fast.
I have created an IFS HA solution for a client that uses IceBreak to save
changed/new IFS objects on to another system i. It works well in real time,
and handles creation/changed/deleted objects as well as security changes.
The backup system is no more than a few seconds behind the live system.

Using XML, JSON, specific programs (URLs), and embedded "instructions" in
the XML or JSON stream provides one with exceptional flexibility and control
over both the client and the server system

Currently, I would not dream of using any other product. I have a tried
several others including CGIDEV, Apache/Tomcat, etc., but none of them are
as easy to use as IceBreak or as flexible as IceBreak. Don't get me wrong,
the other products are very flexible, but one must spend oodles of time
creating ones own library of features. IceBreak already has them.

Take a look at IceBreak ... uses RPG to create web services.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'd like to see more in-depth discussion. I
recall an article, written by Jon Paris about using CGIDEV2 to generate
formatted XML responses from templates, but it seems to me that ILE based
web services need a lot more plumbing than that, if they're going to get off
the ground.

I also recall Brad Stone saying that Aaron Bartell knew his XML stuff.
Well, Brad used an explicative instead of saying "stuff", but the point is
that web services involve generating and consuming WSDL files, and SOAP
messages, and stuff like that. There's a lot more to it than generating
XML.

Nathan.
