Just curious, who is telling you this?
Do you read the lists, Mike? There are vocal members of this list who insist that Java is too difficult. Jon Paris, for example, is on record saying that he "can't get his head around" Java. Me, I've been fighting FOR Java uptake for years, and I have clients happily using it.

Our office is down the street
from Virginia Commonwealth University, and they turn out all the
green-haired Java programmers we can eat.
Nothing wrong with that. Personally (and this is my personal preference) I like RPG better for business logic and Java for middleware. I'm not sure what your mix is nor what your strategic direction is, but there's nothing saying that Java young'uns and RPG programmers can't get along.

As for moving RPG
programmers, I find they are in two camps. Programmers that have
embraced concepts like ILE procedures have really taken to Java (HTML
is actually the harder nut to crack for them). Programmers that are
still writing monolithic RPG applications and still doing things the
same way they have for the last 20 years, well, what can you say?
Well, there will always be programmers who don't make the move to OO. It has nothing to do with RPG; I taught Java classes in a technical school. That doesn't surprise me, nobody is good at everything - I'm not very good with cars. That's one reason I like EGL - it makes Java EE accessible to procedural programmers. But I am sorely disappointed at the "experts" in the i community who slam the various Java-based technologies.

The anti-Java bias is clear on these lists, and the anti-EGL bias even clearer. It's been noticed in the broader community.
