It's probably not an apples to apples, point by point comparison, but
Java and .Net are two of the most sought after dev environments for the
System "i" for modernization.

And when we first started planning this event, over a year ago, the original intent was to do a pure .Net vs JSP Model 2 showdown, along the lines of what you and i had been teaching in classes and seminars. However, the point is not about trying to teach technologies, but application development tools, and in the last year IBM's direction for development has been to use the EGL in RDi-SOA to develop JSP Model 2 applications.

You can, of course, still build JSP Model 2 applications by hand. You can hand-craft your JSP and hand-write the Java code. You don't need to use EGL. But the biggest complaint I've heard about JSP Model 2 that I've heard from the industry pundits is that Java is too much of a learning curve, and that's why I prefer to teach the EGL tooling now - it allows you to use procedural syntax to build Java applications.

Joe and I will be providing live hands on experience with both
platforms. The takeaways being real examples to jump start in-house
development and give attendees a chance to work with both environments
for a day.

And that's the real point. You and I will be teaching people how to use the latest tooling to build applications. You'll be using Visual Studio and VB to build .Net applications, I'll be using RDi-SOA and EGL to build Java EE applications. In both cases, attendees will get hands-on experience building browser-based applications that leverage existing data and business logic on the i.
