Hi Crispin

I was just thinking back to the Power 6 announcements I went to where they
talked about (my summarization here) basically buying p iron and then adding
the partitions either or i or p flavour that you needed. To make that work
you need to have a cost for an i partition that's not system or hardware
related.

I don't have any documentation to support this but in our future I see i
being positioned much more as an OS/database combo running on some iron
rather than a complete box (this has been coming for a long time). A logical
outcome of this might be licensing by the core so it is priced using the
same mechanism as the other DB's.

Personally (and I find this ironic given other threads about the system i
database compared to real DBMS's) I think that making it more like the other
DB's is what will ultimately do it in.

If you wanted to run multiple i partitions on a p, how would you do it. In
the past you couldn't, but ....

Food for thought :)

Regards
Evan Harris

Evan,

Any chance you have some literature supporting that? A link perhaps. Is it
Power 6, or i 6.1 in this context?

Either way, it would be a killer if the benefits of partitioning are FAR
outweighed by the additional costs.

Thinking aobut it, I can't see how that would work. This surely can't be
true.

You've scared me... :)

Crispin.

Actually, now I think about it - this may no longer be true. The licensing
on power 6 might be different.

You only need one OS license for the box - it covers all partitions.
