But does it need to be done in RPG? Is there a reason it can't be .NET? The
only reason I ask is that you already have the tools in place (except for
maybe the driver). There is no built-in mechanism for this on the 400. Also,
what will the schema of your XML be? If you want to later import this into a
handheld or other .NET program, it will need to be in the MS DataSet XML
standard.

Does this even need to be a program, or is it simply a task you have to do
once in a while? I have a new .NET Ad Hoc SQL tool out that would let you
execute your SQL and then save the results as MS DataSet XML (among other
things). If your IFS is mapped, you can save it directly to your 400. Check

If you want/need to do it in RPG, here is a sample program on my website
that demonstrates writing XML to the IFS:

It even includes some indenting for readability. It just reads from an
array, but you could obviously alter it to read an SQL cursor instead. You
should be able to use most of the subprocedures as they are. The key one to
change would be "WriteData()".
