It wouldn't be quite that simple.  The browser would expect a page to be
returned by an HREF.

A couple alternatives come to mind.  I think a java applet on the current
page could connect to the server and ask for a true/false response.  The
applet could export a method that could return a true/false value to java
script.

Second, an HREF link could return a page that contained a form with a
hidden
variable.  If you didn't want that page to replace the current page, then
you may be able to reference a hidden target frame.  Your java script could
reference the hidden variable in the hidden frame.

Sorry, I don't have a source example.
