That's the general convention.

Any port not currently defined in your sevices table is fair game.  Be aware 
that some (badly-written IMHO) applications use alternative methods for 
determining available port numbers (hardcoded, data areas, or in config files). 
 
However the high numbers (i.e., 5 digit numbers) are usually avaliable on the 
AS/400 even if they are in use on other platforms (Microsquib steal a heap of 
high ports for various things).
