  • Subject: Websphere Upgrade, progress

I am upgrading Websphere from 1.1 to 3.5.2. I am not using it for anything
production so I really have it easy compared to those who need to follow all
the upgrade paths for their Java apps.

But, since our machine is a production machine and running 20 plus live
websites (just the beginning), let's just say it's interesting.

Day 1, install hyper PTFs to fix problem when loading a large number of
PTFs. IPL at 1am to apply.
Day 2, install latest CUM PTFs. Download PTF for NT version of WAS admin
console to upgrade it to 3.5.2. IPL at 1am to apply PTFs.
Day 3(today), install the Websphere product PTFs to upgrade it to 3.5.2.
IPL scheduled for 1am to apply these PTFs. Install upgrade for NT admin
cosole.

It's been ok, but today when I upgraded the NT version, hahaha... what a
joke. You run the install.bat file and get a dos prompt asking "what is the
directory that Websphere is installed in?" So, I look and type in
/Websphere. The DOS window goes away. Hmmm... Didn't seem to work. And no
messgages.

Run it again, type in C:\Websphere. Same thing.. nothing. Not even an
error message.

Look again, and just for S&G, try /Websphere/AppServer... wala... it seems
to be running. After some gyrations it just quits. The only way I can
check if it worked is checking the version. It says 3.5.2, so I hope it
worked. Nice install program, IBM. DOS windows? C'mon... Where's your
tuff Java app?

And why 3.5 won't work with 3.5.2 blows my mind. It sure seems like a
scramble to get fixes out there for Websphere, and if they're that
complicated that 3.5 and 3.5.2 won't work together, that tells me a LOT is
done (PTF was 28meg zipped..that's huge). now THAT's an epiphany!

I never did get the admin cosole to work on 3.5. I think it's because the
QEJB subsystem jobs were erroring out telling me that I didn't have the Java
licenced programs installed, even though I did. Again, very nice.

Luckily, so far none of this seems to have affected my HTTP server. It's
still running like a champ.
