I apologize for my rant last night... but at this point no one can convince me that this process is straightforward. I am not the one making this difficult. IBM did that. And I can see that I'm not the only one. And Mike, that's THE problem. There's "all manner of instruction" all over the place...

I appreciate that it has been "improved" for v9.5... but I'm on 9.1. I will upgrade later.

I located every single one of the links below before I ever posted a question here... I ignored those specifically referencing v9.5.
The source of my frustration began with the ESS site itself - actually finding the "real" Rational Dev - and not products many years ago (we've been on these systems since before they were called AS/400).
- I have the IM installed - it doesn't like the "repository"... it says "the following repositories are not connected". The repository is pointing to the iso ZIP folders on my C: drive.
- I get errors when I try to import the .jar file - "SDP Licenses.

So I uninstalled everything... including IM.

I really don't understand what you're referring to below with disk1/Launchpad.exe. I know these are disk images, but like most laptops I don't have a disk. The only Launchpad.exe I see is in the IM directory and requires command line options according to the error message. So I used "install.exe" instead. That seems to have installed IM.

No idea what is next.

You are thinking too much and making things difficult for yourself. There
is all manner of instructions about how to install RDI

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21667734
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/r/rdi/
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21668005

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSAE4W_9.5.0/com.ibm.iseries.xd.doc/topics/c_node_installing.html
all found with
https://www.google.ca/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=rational%20developer%20fro%20i%209.5%20install

Basically download the installer and activation kit from where you get your
entitlement (Passport Advantage or ESS) unpack it and run disk1/launchpad
with run-as-administrator. When complete use IM to apply your license.
The installer will install or update IM as needed, for RDI and Windows 7
there is no need to install IM first.

Well.... after 3 or 4 different links (some of which were very obscure), I
downloaded and installed the Installation Manager only to have it not be
able to use RDi package I downloaded.

At this point, I give up. I'm calling IBM tomorrow and THEY can install it
FOR me. This is beyond ridiculous. I literally wasted HOURS of my time
today on this alone.

Sorry to rant - but IBM guys, you have NO EXCUSE for this BS!

I'm sorry, I really appreciate your help... I too googled it... but I also
found that hornets' nest of garbage. I can't find anything in that "web of
disgust" that remotely looks like an install program to download.

You need to download and install a piece of software so that you can
install a piece of software. How COMPLETELY STUPID is that?

Actually, the RDi files do include Installation Manager. However, it is
usually wise to download the latest version (1.8.4) independently.

See here for acquiring IM:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27025142
(I just Googled "INSTALLATION MANAGER 1.8.4"). Make sure you download the
Windows version of IM.

I agree - not as straightforward as it could be. But that's IBM for you ...

<grin>
Brian.

Brian,

I found that prior to sending the email. I downloaded from the ESS site.
I have the .iso ZIP files.

Is it still the same? If so, where the heck do I get Installation Manager?

I can see from the developerworks forum, this is sore point... I can't type
the words that are coming out of my mouth right now.

Please IBM, can you make this more difficult and painful? Please!!! I
like it. (sorry) :(

This should point you in the right direction:

http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21668005#ZIPINSTALL

In essence:
- Download the latest version (1.8.4) of Installation Manager (IM) and
install.
- Run IM and use FILE > PREFERENCES > REPOSITORIES to identify the
DISKTAG.INF file in DISK1 directory of your unzipped RDi 9.1
- Use the INSTALL option on the main IM screen to install RDi 9.1
- Run RDi 9.1 and point the Workspace launcher to your copied workspace
- In RDi use HELP > INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE to install the iSphere plug-in
- Install Data Studio using IM in a similar manner as RDi above.

Hope this helps.
Brian.

Subject: [WDSCI-L] Installing RDi on a new PC

I'm replacing my desktop PC with a laptop... Still on Windows 7. So I
need
to re-install RDi. I copied the unzipped v9.1 folder over to my new
machine, but it won't install - something about installation manager.

So I have a pretty simply installation... I had RDi installed, Data Studio,
iSphere plug, and nothing more. I have my workspace saved and copied over
to the new PC. Is there a document on how best to complete the task of
re-installation? What's the best method to quickly restore my environment
to what it was before?

Thanks.
