For what it's worth, there are browser plug-ins that allow you to hook
up your own preferred editor to text areas in relatively seamless
fashion. Perhaps the most famous is "It's All Text!" for Firefox:

I haven't used it (or anything like it) myself, but it's popular
enough that there is strong demand for similar tools on other
